Ingredients
Scale
Puff Pastry:
- 2 sheets puff pastry (approximately 500g)
Cheese Filling:
- 100 g Boursin cheese or herbed cream cheese
- 50 g shredded cheddar cheese
Meat:
- 150 g prosciutto or salami or capocollo
Toppings:
- Mixed seeds (such as sesame, poppy, sunflower)
Egg Wash:
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) to ensure it’s ready for baking the pastry tree.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Lay out one sheet of puff pastry on a parchment-lined baking tray. Spread the Boursin or herbed cream cheese evenly over it, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Add Meat Layer: Arrange the prosciutto, salami, or capocollo slices evenly over the cheese layer to cover the entire surface.
- Add Cheddar Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of the meat layer for added flavor and texture.
- Top with Second Pastry Sheet: Place the second puff pastry sheet over the layers and gently press down to seal. Trim edges if necessary.
- Shape the Christmas Tree: Using a sharp knife, cut the pastry into a large triangle shape to resemble a Christmas tree. Cut small slits or strips along the sides to create branches, twisting each slit slightly away from the center to form a tree-like effect.
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg with milk and brush the entire pastry tree generously to give it a golden color when baked.
- Add Mixed Seeds: Sprinkle mixed seeds over the tree for a crunchy texture and decorative finish.
- Bake: Place the baking tray in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, then transfer to a serving platter. Slice and enjoy your festive savoury pastry tree.
Notes
- You can substitute the cheese to suit your taste, using any creamy or shredded cheese combination.
- For a vegetarian alternative, omit the meat or replace it with roasted vegetables or spinach.
- Ensure all layers are evenly distributed to prevent the pastry from becoming soggy.
- Twisting the strips gently outward helps to create a more defined tree appearance.
- This recipe can be prepared a few hours in advance and refrigerated before baking.
